The “Tabernacle” (Templo del Sagrario) in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán

The “Tabernacle” (Templo del Sagrario) in Pátzcuaro is one of the most representative of our magical village architectural monuments, and undoubtedly one of the most photographed. Its architectural beauty is a fine example of colonial architecture.

In addition to the famous archways outside, you will also appreciate its altar, which is a striking example of Baroque. According to the Cultural Heritage Booklet of Pátzcuaro, this altar has a mixed Baroque style, with painting and sculpture of the same era, with buttresses of the 17th century. The building also has architectural elements of the 18th century, as well as some notable reminiscent of the Mudejar style in the door and entrance arch.

It’s a stunning historical structure, founded by Don Vasco de Quiroga as Hospital de Santa Martha between 1536 and 1540. At that time, Don Vasco requested that an image of the Virgin be made, using the technique of corn cane paste. The image was consecrated and named Patron Saint with the name of Health. Thus, the figure of Our Lady of Health of Pátzcuaro remained for 150 years in the Sagrario

Construction of the Sagrario began in 1603. It was slow going. It wasn’t until almost a century later, in 1691, the Bishop Fray Baltazar de Covarrubias, allowed the indigenous people of the Hospital of Santa Martha to “take the Virgin for a stroll” each year during Good Friday. That tradition endures and the Virgin “goes for a stroll” each Easter in Pátzcuaro.  It’s a magical event.

With the passage of the years, the admiration of the Virgen de la Salud de Pátzcuaro swelled, and was already beginning to outgrow the confines of the antiquated Hospital. And, in 1691, the construction of the actual sanctuary of the tabernacle was begun, and was dedicated the 8 December 1717, by the priest Eugenio Ponce de León.

With the construction of the sanctuary, the original Hospital de Santa Martha was allowed to go to ruins. You can still see what remains of the Hospital adjacent to the Tabernacle.
The brotherhood, Deposition and Burial of Christ and the Solitude of the Virgin, was founded in 1719.

In 1743, this religious site became the convent of the Dominican nuns, newly founded in Pátzcuaro.

The venerable Virgen de la Salud de Pátzcuaro remained in the Tabernacle for 191 years, until 1908, when it was moved to what is now the Basílica of Pátzcuaro, where she is visited annually by tens of thousands of faithful followers.
