The indigenous Purépecha settled on the shores of Lake Patzcuaro. In the sixteenth century the Spaniards marveled at the richness of aquatic and terrestrial vegetation, as well as its great diversity of fish and birds.

Visit the iconic island of Janitzio, with its famous lepidopterarium (butterfly house); but don't forget the other islands. Their special characteristics and contact with indigenous communities will leave you with myriad and beautiful memories.

Check out the new the zip lines! There’s one between the islands of Janitzio and Tecuena (half a mile long!), and the newer line connecting Pacanda and Yunuen is now in service.

The communities of the Lake Region are typical villages, where the language and customs of the Purépecha are preserved (the majority of the residents also speak Spanish). The towns are full of history, each with its own cultural wealth which can often be observed through different artistic expressions.

Patzcuaro Lake is the ideal place to learn more about the Purépecha culture. On the banks of the Lake, you will find two important archaeological sites, Ihuatzio and Tzintzuntzan, testimony of the importance of this Region in the pre-Columbian era.
