Our friend Andrew Carhartt and American resident living in Pátzcuaro share with us his experience from his last visit to this unique place:

"The Antiguo Convento Franciscano de Santa Ana in Tzintzuntzan has always been an intriguing attraction overlooking the 500-year-old olive grove in front of the temples of Tzintzuntzan.  Construction of the building was completed in 1597.

We posted a blog about the Antiguo Convento Franciscano de Santa Ana Tzintzuntzan in 2012.  It was undergoing renovation then….

It is now the Museo Antiguo Convento Franciscano de Santa Ana, the renovation completed under the auspices of the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH).

The third archway to the left in the above image is a “capilla abierta,” or “outdoor chapel.”  It was here that, supposedly, Vasco de Quiroga performed his first mass in the region.

The middle archway in the first image is the entrance to the Museum ($20 pesos).  

An 86-page booklet about the Museum is available at the front desk.  A donation is requested.

The first half of the booklet contain good, general historical information about the indigenous Purépecha; the second half is dedicated to the Museum and how it was previously used as a monastery.

The archway to the right in the first image is the entrance to the “sanctuary.”

There are numerous ancient petroglyphs embedded in walls throughout.

There are many restored murals depicting historical events and occasions.

This Museum experience is a fine one, with many centuries-old artifacts, such as a beautiful life-size figure of Santa Ana, and an elaborate incense burner."
