La Tzararacua Waterfalls

La Tzaráracua Waterfalls, is a surprising spectacle of nature. A good option, if you visit us for several days at Hotel Mansion Iturbe in Patzcuaro and want to be in contact with nature.

The distance between Patzcuaro and La Tzaráracua is about 65 kilometers taking the road 14D.

Our friend Andrew Carhartt, an American resident in Patzcuaro, shares with us his experience of his last visit to this beautiful place:

“La Tzaráracua is located about 10 kilometers (5 miles) outside Uruapan.  It is a site of one main 40-meter-high waterfall, with multiple, smaller waterfalls (coming out of the walls of the hill) on either side of the main one.  It is unique to the experience of the writer.

The water from these falls comes from Cupatitzio spring in Parque Nacional, which is at least 5 miles away.  A river with the same name carries water to these falls.  Considering that the spring also supplies the water for the numerous waterfalls and water features at Parque Nacional, the amount of water coming from the spring has to be mind-boggling.

To give an idea of the size of the falls, the little specks of color on the left of the image below are people.  You can almost feel the force of the watering pouring through the orifice.

Actually, the main fall is made up of two falls, as you can see in the following image.  The peripheral falls are coming directly out of the side of the hill.

Access to the falls is by horse (15-20 minutes) or walking down (and up!) 600 stairs.  Also during this season, the paths are wet and slippery, even for the horses – possibly another reason to wait until the dry season to visit.  However, there are many sturdy metal railings to steady you.

There is a 300-meter-long zipline (“tiroleza”) to carry you over the gorge, but you can get from one side to the other by either a little passenger “trolley,” or simply walking across a lovely stone bridge.

And if you are very fortunate, a good size “tejón” may come to welcome you, hoping for a chunk of watermelon or mango.  Don’t be fooled, however!  One dictionary translates “tejón” in English to “badger,” and we all know the reputation of badgers!  The second image gives a hint of what damage this “little guy’s” teeth could do if you annoyed him (if the image were in focus, that is!).
