The Monumental Nativity in Patzcuaro, Michoacan

The Monumental Nativity in Patzcuaro is located in the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga across from our very own Hotel Mansión Iturbe.  During these end-of-the-year holidays, visit the nativity and stroll about the Plaza to get an over-all feeling, admiring all the fascinating details.

The Monumental Nativity is a nativity full of creativity and, significantly, contains elements made by local artisans, using techniques that have endured for generations.

The brilliantly conceived conception was to present the seven principal regions of the State of Michoacán: Apatzingán, the coast, the region of the monarch butterflies, Morelia, Uruapan, Zamora, and of course Pátzcuaro.

You can admire different types of handicraft of each region between the details of birth: Noteworthy crafts in vegetable fibers of Ihuatzio in the Lake Region, fiber of coconut from Aquila from the coast, shawls from Angahuan near the Paricutin volcano, the colorful pots from Cocucho in the Purépecha plateau, the famous hats of Jarácuaro (land of the dance of the Viejitos), masks from Tócuaro, carved wood from Tzintzuntzan, artisan textiles from Patzcuaro, and blacksmithing from Morelia.

In the nativity itself, huge, imaginative figures are represented: The Virgen Mary, Saint Joseph, and the Baby Jesus.  Nearby, you will also find the Wise Men, and their enormous, striking animals:  the camel, the horse, and the elephant.

Among the numerous figures that adorn the square you'll find iconic characters of Michoacan; as the Cuerudos of Apatzingán, the Tlahualiles of Sahuayo, the fishermen of the coast, and the traditional Viejitos.

The installation of the Plaza Christmas wouldn’t be complete without the huge Christmas tree which changes colors at night – a very special illuminating touch to the emblematic Plaza Vasco de Quiroga in Pátzcuaro.
