Festival of Christ the Redeemer in Tzintzuntzan, Michoacán

The festival of Christ the Redeemer in Tzintzuntzan – host to the event – is one of the most traditional festivals in Michoacán and takes place eight days before “Carnival Tuesday.”  At Hotel Mansion Iturbe, we invite you to participate in the festivities in this important Magical Town.

Residents of other villages around Lake Patzcuaro make their pilgrimage to Tzintzuntzan to honor Christ the Redeemer, in the form of a 16th-century canvas in the Colonial Art Collection at the Santa Ana Ex Convent.

The image purportedly possesses miraculous properties is venerated by thousands of faithful from every lake-side community.  Specifically, the community thanks Señor del Rescate, or Christ the Redeemer, for having saved their ancestors from a smallpox plague in the 18th Century, when people were dying from the disease.  But the veneration extends to other such instances, and also for good harvests.

In 1536, Tzintzuntzan became the first bishopric in Michoacán, and remains a fervently religious community.  Leading up to the solemn festival, there is a mourning service, plus masses and pilgrimages from all around the lake.

Artisans take advantage of this gathering to sell their wares in the Olive Courtyard in front of the temples.  Shopping in the shade of 500-year-old olive trees – what an awesome atmosphere!  In addition to selling products directly to the public, there is also an artisan’s competition, where you will see the best of the best.
