End-of-Year Vacations in Patzcuaro

There are lots of different end-of-year destinations in Mexico, and an ideal one is Patzcuaro, especially if you like Magical Towns.  Accordingly, our guests at Hotel Mansión Iturbe had front-row seats for ushering in the New Year in style.

Every visitor to Patzcuaro sooner or later finds his or her way to the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, right in front of our Hotel, and they were not disappointed this year.  Hundreds of bright red poinsettias adorned the flowerbeds of one of the loveliest plazas in all Mexico.

An enormous Christmas tree, as always, was the place for photo ops this season.  Around dusk, other lighted figures – including the traditional nativity, children at a piñata, and Santa in his sleigh – slowly became visible, as well.

The cantera lamp columns of the plaza were also decorated with hundreds of lights, adding even more sparkles in the eyes of the holiday revelers.

Many of the balconies of the buildings surrounding the Plaza were also illuminated, and town hall added its illuminated wish, Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

It’s always interesting to visit the various temples of Patzcuaro to see their individual interpretations of the nativity.  For example, this year, the Basilica’s version depicted Mary and Joseph dressed as indigenous.

The traditional piñatas were ubiquitous, from the Marketplace, to offices and stores and private homes, inside and out.

The perennial poinsettia also vied for attention at every turn, including the Museum and Casa de los Once Patios, in addition to the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga.

Children can find their favorite  artisan toys, like tops, yoyos, wooden carts, or stick horses, right down the street from Hotel Mansión Iturbe.
