Artisan Toys in Patzcuaro and the Lacustrine Region

Artisan toys are an important part of our folk art. Our guests at Hotel Mansion Iturbe are constantly asking us where we can find these things in our area.

Various toys of different materials were already being made in pre-Hispanic times, but interestingly the craft really blossomed in the Colonial Era when the toys became tools of the evangelists for their work. We can still see this association during important religious celebrations, such as Day of the Dead, and the Christmas tradition of Joseph and Mary going from door to door with their newborn Jesus looking for a place to spend the night.
