Mexican Folk Art on the Banks of Lake Patzcuaro

For Mexican folk art lovers, Patzcuaro is a paradise for visitors to the artisan workshops on the banks of Lake Pátzcuaro.

Indeed, for our guests at Hotel Mansion Iturbe, there are so many such destinations, it’s often difficult to decide just which to investigate. And we are to help you make this difficult decision.

If you are among those undecided, a good place to start is at our very own artisan showcase, right next to our Restaurante Doña Paca.

Don Vasco de Quiroga (1470-1565) is largely responsible for making it so convenient: He is credited for organizing the various communities around the lake to specialize in one artisan product each. For example, everyone here knows that Jarácuaro is the place to go for straw hats. If you see a shiny black ceramic candlestick, it’s almost certainly from Santa Fe de la Laguna. Certain communities are known for particular styles of masks, jewelry, textiles, clay figures, furniture, etc.

This idea eventually extended past the banks of the Lake to include further-away places, such as Santa Clara del Cobre (40 minutes from Patzcuaro), known for its copperwares.

There are no “mega-stores” in these villages, of course, which means that more often than not, the actual work is typically performed immediately behind, over, or next to where the wares are sold, if not in the store window itself.

Shopping in these places is much more than just buying stuff; the artisans are happy to be engaged in conversation, even while they are busy creating those lovely objects.

Design your own itinerary and hire one of our recommended taxi drivers for a couple hours. Or, if you can’t decide among the many options, you can speak with our in-house bilingual expert, Marcia Parrino; she can take you to places you’ve only dreamed of.

Pátzcuaro could be considered “Artisan Central,” where many artisans from the outlying areas bring their wares to sell. Casa de los Once Patios and Palacio de Huitzimengari, both on the Plaza Don Vasco de Quiroga, are two such venues, and both are but a stone’s throw from Hotel Mansión Iturbe.
