La Fiesta de los Negritos (Fiesta of “The Little Dark Ones”) in Tócuaro
La Fiesta de los
Negritos en Tócuaro coincides with the Día
de la Calendaria (February 2). This custom goes way back, and the
community goes to great lengths to retain this tradition, which is based on
generations upon generations.

Tócuaro is a mere 15 kilometers from Pátzcuaro (20 minutes away, on the way
to Erongarícuaro).
While other communities traditionally celebrate this event in December, we can enjoy the celebration at the same time as Día dela Candelaria – “two for the price of one!”
The fiesta
in Tócuaro typically takes place
after mass at the church (6:00 p.m.).
The obligatory band appears, and then the children – cheerful and proud
with their colorful outfits – arrive in their bucolic attires to perform their
traditional dances.
But even before mass is over, we hear the fireworks that herald the beginning of the festivities.
Typically, we see the pastoral actors in their traditional getups, but Tócuaro is noted for their distinctive, phantasmagorical “little devil” masks with protruding snakes or dragons (representing the devil), which are known as “little dark ones.”
Tócuaro is known for these masks made of wood, which take on a life of their own when worn as masks on humans!
The festival has its roots in the belief that these little demons were all around the Baby Jesus – until, of course, he was “presented” at church.”
The Fiesta goes on for several days, and is preceded by a “mask exhibition,” where the local artisans are able to display their wares. There you will also find wood furniture and embroidery, all exemplary of Mexican folk art.
