J’ATZINGUENI, or Corn Stalk Paste, and its origins in the Pátzcuaro Lake Region

            Centuries ago, corn was – and continues to be today – the main food staple of Mexico .  But the Purépechas found a surprising, secondary use for this otherwise innocent plant:  They used it, combining it with various other local “ingredients,” in creating figures.  The Purépechas called the resulting substance “J’ATZINGUENI” – a legacy of the Purépechas to the world.  The Spanish themselves came to appreciate this “new” artistic medium. It was a custom of the mesoamericans to carry images of their gods into war; they believed the presence of the heavy and bulky figures would increase their chances of success on the battlefield.  Typically, it was the principal god who accompanied them to infuse the warriors with valor and courage.  Furthermore, they also believed that if they were defeated and the figures ended up in the hands of the victorious, the idols would wreak revenge upon them even while in their custody.       Siglos atrás, la planta de maíz significó (como continua siendo a la fecha) la principal fuente de alimentación del pueblo mexicano. Pero los Purépechas buscaron su máximo aprovechamiento. Así nació la elaboración de figuras a base de caña y una pasta que resulta de la combinación de diversas substancias locales, conocida por los Purépechas como J’atzingueni. Un legado de la Cultura Purépecha al Mundo. Una técnica que fue apreciada también por los europeos desde el punto de vista artístico.        Los pueblos mesoamericanos por costumbre, llevaban a sus dioses al campo de batalla; creían que su presencia protectora sería benéfica para obtener la victoria. Artisan Exhibition of Night of the Dead in Patzcuaro

      The Day of the Dead Artisan Exhibition is one of the main annual attractions in the State of Michoacan .   The rituals of the venerated ancestros celebrated in the lake region of Patzcuaro are well known, and the Artisan Exhibition , held right in front of Hotel Mansión Iturbe, is also anticipated with much enthusiasm.    The majestic Plaza Vasco de Quiroga – one of the most beautiful in Mexico – is the perfect venue for showing off the indigenous folk art of Michoacan.   Most of the techniques were either perfected or learned during the era of Don Vasco de Quiroga’s evangelism in the sixteenth century, and have been handed down from parents to their children.   The efforts of Don Vasco – “Tata Vasco,” as he is affectionately called – are never forgotten. Tianguis Artesanal de Noche de Muertos en Pátzcuaro

       Uno de los principales atractivos de la Temporada de Noche de Muertos en Michoacán. Además las Tradicionales Velaciones y Rituales ancestrales que se llevan a cabo en la Región Lacustre, es el Tianguis Artesanal que se instala justo frente al Hotel Mansión Iturbe en Pátzcuaro.        La Majestuosa Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, una de las más bellas del Continente Americano, es testigo de esta muestra del Arte Popular Mexicano. Esta exposición   conserva técnicas ancestrales, algunas de ellas perfeccionadas durante le época de la evangelización de Don Vasco de Quiroga y otras aprendidas por la Comunidad Purépecha durante este mismo periodo. SECOND WORLD CULTURAL TOURISM EXPO IN MORELIA

On September 29, 2011, marked the first day of the Second World Cultural Tourism Expo in Morelia , Michoacán.   For four exciting days, tourist attractions of Michoacán and other international destinations were showcased. During the kickoff cocktail party, national and international concessionaires, tour companies, and Michoacán hotel owners were able to mingle and brainstorm about tourism challenges and goals.   Directors of the Council for the Promotion of Mexican Tourism were the primary facilitators for the event.     It was an expo to show to the world the historic, cultural, and natural riches of Michoacán.   If we had had time, we could have attended about 50 different cultural events held in various public venues in Morelia .       An important event during this World Expo took place in Pátzcuaro “La Magía de mis Pueblos .”   An exposition of pictures of the different Magic Towns in México. SEGUNDA FERIA MUNDIAL DE TURISMO CULTURAL EN MORELIA

       El pasado 29 se Septiembre, se inauguró en Morelia, Michoacán; la 2ª. Feria Mundial de Turismo Cultural. Importante escaparate, para mostrar al Mundo durante 4 días, los atractivos Turísticos de Michoacán, México y de destinos internacionales.          Durante el cocktail inaugural, expositores nacionales e internacionales, hoteleros michoacanos y Tour Operadores Internacionales, pudimos convivir e intercambiar inquietudes sobre las necesidades de los Turistas en la actualidad. Importante fue la participación de los directores de las Oficinas del Consejo de Promoción Turística de México CPTM, quienes sirvieron de enlace para una grata convivencia.           Una Feria que sirvió para mostrar la riqueza histórica, cultural y natural de Michoacán al Mundo.
